The other day, the 12-year old and I sat down to watch David Attenborough’s new Netflix documentary ‘A Life On Our Planet’.
I didn’t expect the emotional rollercoaster it would take me on.
We all know about plastic pollution and climate change, but seeing the statistics brought to life with footage from his decades of research and conservation work really brings home how much devastation we’ve wreaked on our planet.
In the past couple of years we’ve made a conscious effort to do better. We’ve reduced our use of single-use plastics, cut back on food wastage and the amount of meat we eat.
But I came away thinking I still need to do more.
Moving forward, I want to support eco-friendly companies committed to reducing the impact they have on the environment.
Which is why I was so impressed when I heard about environmentally friendly watch company Nordgreen last year, and was gifted one of their gorgeous Philosopher watches. This Danish watch company was set up in 2017 by Pascar Sivam and Vasilij Brandt, featuring the elegant creations of chief designer Jakob Wagner.
It stands apart from its competitors by placing just as much importance on corporate social responsibility as it does on designing beautiful, high-quality timepieces.
‘Nord’ reflects the Nordic background, while ‘Green’ reflects their commitment to sustainability (if you’ve heard the word bandied about but aren’t completely sure what it means, the definition of sustainability is: the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance… which is a fancy way of saying ‘use as little as possible and replace as much of it as you can’).
To achieve this, they have many eco-initiatives embedded into their business plan. The first is to plant trees to offset the carbon emissions generated by their Copenhagen office, and every global order (how it works is that they calculate the amount of carbon they create, and how many trees are required to absorb it, then arrange for that number of trees to be planted).
Their packaging is created from responsibly managed forests, and the felt inside from up-cycled plastic bottles. They also take used watches, refurbish them until they’re good as new, and resell them for up to 30 percent off.
But, perhaps most impressive is their ‘Giving Back Programme’. Every time a product is sold by this environmentally friendly watch company, the buyer gets to pick one of three non-profit initiatives to receive additional support – the current NGO’s being supported provide either two months of clean water to one person in The Central African Republic, one month of education to a child in India, or the preservation of 200 sq ft of rainforest in Latin America.
As founders Pascar Sivam and Vasilij Brandt explain: ‘We believe the right to good health, a clean environment, and a full education are rights for all. The harsh reality, however, is that much of the world does not experience them.
‘Motivated by our Danish values, when we founded Nordgreen we knew we had to do our part to help to change this in whatever way we could. There was no excuse not to give back.’
Pas and Vas have no intentions of slowing down their altruistic efforts – upcoming projects include transitioning to 100-percent recycled packaging, and completely digitalising their paper manuals and products.
This environmentally friendly watch company is showing companies how to successfully move forward with quality, creativity and compassion.
