VLOG STARS OF THE FUTURE // free digital workshops for kids

Vlogging for kids editing Big Sis

Keeping the girls busy these holidays has been slightly more challenging than usual – our big house renovation only finished in May, so we’ve been sticking close to home.

It’s been nice to settle in and really enjoy the house, especially our new open-plan kitchen diner, but it’s gotten to that point now where the girls are getting sick of the sight of the same four walls.

So when we were invited to join a DISCOVERY WITH THREE vlogging for kids workshop, I jumped at the chance to get them out of the house and also learn something new.

I didn’t tell the girls much about it beforehand, so they weren’t sure what to expect when we arrived at the Discovery space in Maidenhead.

We were welcomed inside and shown to an audiovisual room, where the smiling instructor handed the girls an iPad to share. He showed them the iMovie app that was installed, and then ran through how to use it.

There were only seven other kids in the workshop, so they all had plenty of time to ask questions. ‘Right, time for you to go and do some filming!’ the instructor announced.

The girls looked at me excitedly. ‘We get to make my own movie?!’ they gasped. ‘We thought they were just going to stand there and tell us stuff!’

That’s the beauty of these courses – not only are they absolutely FREE, but they really do teach you fun new skills. There’s a huge range of topics on offer, from basic coding and how to use Lightroom editing software, to YouTube tutorials and how to make stop motion animations.

Our children are growing up in a digital world, and it’s important for them to have a grasp of these skills in order to keep pace with technology: these Discovery with Three workshops are such a great way for them to dip their toes into different subjects and see which ones they feel passionate about, at no cost to you.

This may seem too good to be true, but it’s not; there are no strings attached and no hard-sell paid courses afterwards – it’s simply part of Three’s pledge to ‘give back’ to the community.

The girls rushed off to start filming, then sat down to edit their vlog using all the tips and tricks they’d been taught.

I was blown away by how quickly they picked it up, and they had such a great time exploring all the different movie making techniques. ‘That was the BEST DAY EVER!’ they both announced afterwards. ‘When can we go back again?’

And here’s the finished result – if you have time to leave a comment, the girls would LOVE to know what you think…
