Leesa mattress review

The sound of my alarm gently pulls me into wakefulness, and the first thought to float into my head is: ‘Did I sleep?!’ It’s a thought very slightly tinged with panic, as the answer to this question will mould how the entire rest of my day pans out.

I wriggle my toes and stretch out my arms, then I crack open my eyes and blink a few times. The bedroom adjusts quickly into focus, and I realise I’m awake; not dragged from slumber, mind and body desperately screaming for more rest, but actually awake and ready to get out of bed and face the day ahead.

Which means one thing: I SLEPT LAST NIGHT!

Sleep is one of those things you totally take for granted… until you don’t have enough of it. A couple of years ago I began to suffer horribly from insomnia. I’m not talking the odd restless night here and there, I’m talking – at it’s very worst – two entire nights and three days before my body shut down and finally let me collapse into slumberous oblivion.

It’s not nearly as bad as it once was, but every now and again it returns just to show me who’s boss. Luckily, I’ve managed to figure out some ways to fight back. The first thing I realised was that my bedroom had gone from my oasis and was now a place I viewed with dread. Would I sleep tonight? What if I didn’t sleep tonight?! I HAD to sleep tonight!

One of the things I’ve realised is how important it is to invest in a great quality mattress. When the slightest thing – an outside noise, a distracting light, an uncomfortable bed – can make the difference between your insomnia kicking in and not.

So when LEESA got in touch to ask if I was interested in trialling one of their mattresses, it was an easy yes. The Leesa mattress combines three layers of high-quality foam and its unique design prevents those traditional memory foam issues; overheating and annoying ‘roll-together’ dips.

A mattress is an investment, as such it’s one of the more expensive items you’ll buy for your home. Check at the bottom of this post for a £100 discount code, and you can also take advantage of Leesa’s 0% interest financing to further spread the cost.

The mattress arrived right to my doorstep, tightly rolled into a five-foot box that sprang open when I carefully cut open the plastic wrapping, like one of those self-inflating life rafts. Within minutes it had puffed out to its full size and I’d positioned it on to the bed frame.

Leesa mattress review dressed

I felt like my new Leesa mattress deserved to be dressed properly dressed, so I’d ordered some sheets and a pretty new botanical duvet cover. Et voila! Now it was ready for some serious sleeping.

It had been a long time since I’d looked forward to going to bed – as I now viewed it more like a nemesis than a friend – but this time I couldn’t wait to crawl into the crisp new sheets.

My first impression was that it felt quite hard – much firmer than any mattress I’d tried before – and because I’m a side/stomach sleeper I was a little concerned it might be uncomfortable on my shoulder (you know, the one accident-prone me keeps dislocating). But I was pleasantly surprised to find nothing was aching when I woke up the next morning – not even the niggly tension pain I usually get in my lower back until I’m up and moving.

After just one night I couldn’t rule out that it had just been a fluke, but the next morning I woke up feeling just as rested. AND no insomnia either night!

Obviously, I don’t think the Leesa mattress has miraculously cured my sleeping issues, but here’s how I reckon it has helped: the foam layers adjust to your body and the special top layer allows a cooling airflow, so it’s automatically more comfortable. Also, the Leesa is also constructed in a way that absorbs movement, so you’re not bumped and bounced about everytime your partner turns over or your bed interloping child gets that twitchy leg thing.

Without these annoyances and distractions, I find it so much easier to drift off. Whatever the reason, I’m just relieved to be closing my eyes at night, and not opening them again until the morning.

The way it should be.
