I’ve always been a big fan of facial oils. My skin borders on dry and these English winters strip away what little moisture I have, leaving my skin feeling tight, and looking dull.
I must have tried more than a dozen versions over the past decade – including super-expensive ‘big label’ brands – but this Green People special edition damask rose facial oil is right up there with my favourites.
We’ve been huge fans of Green People since Big Sis was born nine years ago. She suffered terribly from atopic eczema as a baby, and I was almost at the end of my wits when the lovely Romy introduced me to their no-scent Organic Babies shampoo and baby wash.
We’d already begun to suspect her skin problems were being caused by sodium lauryl sulphates – a cheap and nasty ingredient that’s added to products to make them foam up (think shampoos, washing powders, soap and even toothpaste). It much too harsh for delicate baby skin (or even tougher adult skin), causing parched skin that becomes irritated and – if left – can then progress into dermatitis and eczema.
By comparison, Green People only uses natural, organic ingredients that are gentle on skin. You’ll never find SLS’s, parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, alcohol (ethanol) or synthetic fragrances or colourants – all products commonly used in skincare products – and they never test on animals.
We threw out our old shampoo (a very well-known baby brand, by the way) and started using the Organic Babies version. I’m not even exaggerating when I say we noticed an improvement within the week. The red, painful blotches got smaller and less irritated. By the time the month was up, they’d virtually disappeared.
We used Green People religiously after that – also swearing by their Organic Children no-scent sun lotion.
The Damask Rose Facial Oil is a special edition, released to celebrate 20 years since Green People was created by mum Charlotte Vøtz, herself desperate to find products to soothe her daughter’s sensitive skin.
The handy pump dispenser releases the oil into the palm of your hand, and immediately you can smell the delicious blend of rose otto, lavender, basil and marjoram. I like to apply when I first jump out the shower, when my face has been freshly scrubbed and really drinks in all that moisture.
I let it sink in while I get dressed, then apply my moisturiser over the top. Some oils can leave your face looking and feeling greasy, but this absorbs quickly and leaves no residue (apart from that divine scent).
Then the oil really gets to work: jojoba and rosehip oils restore suppleness and elasticity, while the thistle seed, sweet almond and avocado work to improve skin texture and really lock in all that added moisture.
When my skin is dry it feels uncomfortable and fine lines become more obvious; this oil helps my skin feel softer, and look dewier (which, in turn, enhances that appearance of youthfulness). And have I mentioned the gorgeous smell?
But don’t just take my word for it – try out the special edition Green People Damask Rose Facial Oil, £29, for yourself, and fight back against dull winter skin.
