I used to be a proper gym bunny, but it all fell by the wayside after my girls were born.
OH works long hours, and we don’t have any family nearby (or in this hemisphere), so it became pretty difficult for to me to get to the gym. I was just beginning to get back into it when I dislocated my shoulder tripping over a wobbly paving stone in Bali. But that’s another story.
The end result: I’ve spent most of the past year trying to get some strength back in my shoulder (this was my eighth dislocation). Progress was frustratingly slow, but I’ve finally got myself to the point where I can put my arm up above my head worrying about it popping out again.
So now I’ve got my confidence back again, you know what that means, right? Time to shop for some new gym clothing!
The gear I used to wear is now either too small or embarrassingly old fashioned, so it’s definitely time to update the kit.
Clockwise, from top left: When it comes to my main workout gear I prefer neutral shade, so loved this Nike Vintage zip-up hoodie to get me to and from the gym. I actually bought this off the SIMPLY BE website (did you realise they’re not just about plus-size styles? While they specialise in sizes 12-32, many of their styles start at a size 8/10).
It drives me nuts is when my headphone cords get snagged on the handles of the exercise machines, so I love these sweat and weather-resistant BOSE sports headphones. The earbuds connect to your device via bluetooth, eliminating the need for the pesky cord, and fasten around the back of your head, making them comfortable and practical.
Apart from the obvious uses for a good sports bra, I love ones that add a little something to my overall gym outfit – like a flash of bright colour that you can see under a plain t-shirt. UNDER ARMOUR have a great range of styles, to suit all budgets.
This is the bottom half of my Simply Be NIKE VINTAGE tracksuit. These are super comfortable, and I LOVE that they’re slim cut, and taper around my legs and ankles – perfect for pilates and yoga.
I love the vibrant colour and the strap detail of this SWEATY BETTY vest top. Made from a special material that pulls sweat away from your body, this super-stretchy style has a built-in bra and is slightly ruched for a flattering silhouette
I’ve been a die-hard fan of ADIDAS SUPERSTAR trainers since last century, literally, so I totally fell in love with their Supercolour range. I’d pretty much love any of the 50 colours, but if I had to pick just one it would be this, ‘Collegiate Aqua’. Isn’t it pretty? I’d wear cushioned sports shoes for high-impact fitness, but these are perfect for general weights and stretching workouts.
With this lot in my gym kit, there really are no more excuses: (middle-aged) beach body, here I come!
