Opium was one of my favourite perfumes when I was growing up (I thought it made me worldly and sophisticated. It didn’t. But at least I smelled amazing).
It was pricey, but luckily I worked in a chemist at the time, so got a discount and was allowed to pay off items a little bit each week.
By the time I left to start journalism school I possessed an entire shelf full of fancy fragrances. I had all the 90’s must-haves – Beautiful, Anais Anais, CKOne, Rive Gauche, Knowing, Coco Chanel (you know if you’re nodding, you’re giving your age away, right?).
When Fragrance Direct asked if I wanted to try their easy online service and order something from their website, I knew I had to give a nod to my fragrant history by choosing Yves St Laurent’s Black Opium.
With notes of black coffee, white florals and vanilla, on paper this was the perfect scent for me. When the bottle quickly arrived a couple of days later it didn’t disappoint – it was warm and spicy, but still floral enough to be fun.
