A while back I wrote a post on WHY FAMILY PHOTOS MATTER, about why it’s so important to document your life – and everyone in it – with photos.
I’ve always been guilty of that ‘mum thing’ where you’re too busy taking pics to actually get some of yourself (plus my OH is a ‘cut-the-top-of-your-head-off’ type of photographer), but made a vow last year to get over my camera-shyness so my girls have lots of memories of us together to look back on when they’re older.
I put this resolution to the test during our family holiday to Bali last summer, by hiring an amazing local photographer, Pande Heryana of APEL PHOTOGRAPHY, to take some photos of us while we were there (it was a wedding, so my New Zealand family were there too – first time we’d all been together in nearly 10 years).
One of my favourites was this shot of me and Lil Sis. I’m lucky that both my girls are loving and affectionate (I know, enjoy it now before they hit pre-teens!) but since the moment she was born, Lil Sis has been my biggest admirer.
As a baby she never let me out of her sight, and co-slept with me until she was a toddler. Even after I’d moved her into her own room I’d wake up every morning and she’d somehow be back in my arms.
As soon as she wakes the first words out of her mouth are: ‘I love you Mummy‘ and at night she falls asleep with her arms wrapped around my neck, whispering, ‘My Mama‘. Even when we’re sitting on the couch watching a movie she has to be pressed right up against me. I used to joke to OH it was like she was trying to actually weld herself to me, so she’d never have to let me go.
This photo captures one of those moments, when she’s looking into my eyes like I’m her moon, her stars and her entire universe.
I know this won’t always be the case – eventually she’ll fall in love and that person will become her everything, and then she’ll be besotted with her own children – but until then I’m making the most of every second of her adoration, and giving it right back.
