I love prawns in pretty much every way possible: in a cocktail with seafood sauce, wok-fried with sambal sauce, spiced with salt and pepper, and deep fried in beer batter.
Like these ones I whipped up the other night – don’t they look delish?
The recipe is super simple – 200 grams of prawns, half a cup of self-raising flour, a pinch of salt and quarter of a can of Innis & Gunn Craft Pale Ale. I combined the dry ingredients, gradually added the ale to make a batter, dipped the prawns, and deep-fried them until they’d turned golden brown. I sautéed some onion, sat the prawns on top and added some slivers of red chilli (l like it HOT, but you can leave these out).
Nothing unusual there, I hear you say, but I have a little secret… the beer was actually Innis & Gunn non-alcoholic Craft Pale Ale from DRY DRINKER, the UK’s largest non-alcoholic and low alcohol beer specialist.
I was curious to see what kind of difference it made, but – honestly – I couldn’t tell the difference. The batter was light, and crunchy and had the same rich, hoppy taste of traditional beers, plus, it had the added goodness of ginseng and vitamin C.
Next, I matched my prawns with a BrewDog Nanny State no-alcohol (and no guilt) beer; all that was missing was sunshine and music. Roll on summer!
The Dry Drinker website was launched late last year by UK father-of-two Stuart Elkington. After deciding he wanted to lead a fitter, healthier lifestyle he gave up alcohol… only to discover a distinct lack of alternatives to fill the beverage void.
It was during a holiday to Spain, while he was enjoying one of the local non-alcoholic beers, that he had the idea to source and bring together the finest no and low alcohol brews from the UK and Europe. And Dry Drinker was born.
The website first launched with the best guilt-free beers from all over Europe, and has since expanded to include alcohol-free wines, a non-alcoholic spirit called Seedlip, and even a teetotal gin and tonic.
Today, Stuart has a growing team behind him, driving their ‘Sober Revolution’. Not just a great alternative for expectant mums, the Dry Drinker range is perfect for designated drivers, health and fitness buffs and people who simply want all the great-tasting fun, but none of the grief the following day.
Stuart’s so impressed with his carefully chosen range he reckons even regular drinkers would find it hard to distinguish between regular beers, and his no and low alcohol versions. Try them for yourself, and see if you agree!
