KEEPING YOUR KIDS CAR SAFE – a Britax car seat review

Something exciting has happened in the Monkey household. In the words of the immortal Willie Nelson song – ‘I’m On The Road Again’.

Yes, check your rear view mirror, and make sure your comprehensive insurance is in place, because I finally have a car again!

In New Zealand I drove everywhere. Sometimes it would actually take  longer to buckle myself in and start the engine, than it would to drive to my destination – such was my jaw-dropping laziness. In Sydney I lived in the city centre and didn’t need a car. In London the traffic was so horrendous that public transport was the lesser of two evils.

But now we have a proper family car and it feels great to be mobile again. Faffing about with one child on public transport is annoying, two is a bloody nightmare. So it was perfect timing when I was approached by Britax to try one of their children’s car seats.

To be honest, I wasn’t very familiar with the Britax range. Like most mums, I’d ended up buying the same car seat I’d seen my friends using, without really looking around first. So I was curious to see how this stacked up.

I gave all my details to the team, and they handpicked this Evolva 1-2-3 Plus (left) as the best seat for 2.5 year old Toddler Girl.

The first thing I liked was the plush look of the seat, which impressed Toddler Girl too. ‘Cooooooool!’ she exclaimed. She then insisted on pulling the seat into the lounge, and sitting in it to watch Harry and His Bucket of Dinosaurs.

I wasn’t looking forward to installing it – working out how to use some car seats can sometimes be like taking part in the Krypton Factor – but it was actually really simple. The diagonal seatbelt is simply threaded through the back, firmly securing it against the seat back, then you use the five-point harness to strap your little one in.

As your child gets older, the Evolva becomes more like a booster seat, and you switch to the diagonal seatbelt, rather than the harness. In fact it grows with your child, from 9kgs (around 9 months) right up until 36kgs (around 12 years of age).

Toddler couldn’t wait to climb in her fancy new seat, and to my pleasant surprise I didn’t even get the usual whingeing as she was buckled in.

It looked really comfortable, like a big plush armchair. I loved the padded headrest, which supported her head perfectly when she nodded off (irrefutable evidence to the right). She always looked so uncomfortable when she fell asleep in the old one.

She also used to slide her arms out of the seat straps, so I was reassured to see how snugly this harness fitted around her. No more wriggling free while I was driving.

It has a reclining position, an adjustable headrest, and a washable cover. Then – to my delight – I discovered it even had a pull out drink holder on one side! Is there nothing this seat can’t do???

Hopefully we’ll never have to put the side impact protection to the test, but it’s reassuring to know that it’s there, should an accident happen. It was a definite thumbs up from the toddler, and me.
The Britax Evolva 1-2-3 RRP is: £159.99 and also comes in a funky new cow print ‘Cowmooflage’. For stockists, visit
